Jannik Sinner made a solid start to his 2025 campaign at
Roland Garros, but many fans were more interested in what he wore.
The
ATP world no. 1 defeated Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets, setting up a meeting with French tennis legend Richard Gasquet, who is playing in his final tournament before retiring after an exceptional career.
There is always a wide variety of outfits for the men's and women's players at each Grand Slam. However, the one provided for Sinner by Nike drew an even more significant reaction than what is usual for top players.
Sinner's shirt was almost entirely green during the match. The only white on it was the collar and Nike tick. Green is not a color often chosen by players, especially the lighter shade of it.
Nike's kit for Sinner led to several humorous responses on social media. Some noted that it was the same shade of green as the popular soft drink Sprite, with fans putting the shirt and bottle together to note the similarities.
Another popular comparison was to the character Luigi, who appears in video games starring the iconic character Mario. In the games, Luigi's green clothes always contrast with Mario's red.
Another beverage chosen by fans was San Pellegrino's sparkling water. The Italian brand has used a green bottle for its popular drink for many years, and Sinner's notable kit at Roland Garros is similar to it.
Sinner then put on a predominantly green long-sleeved shirt with a navy stripe across the middle when the match with Rinderkneach ended. The shirt was also collared, creating an original look that no other player in the tournament is replicating.
The Tennis Channel's X page joined in the fun by noting that the shirt resembled the human host on the American children's series Blue's Clues, which ran for six seasons from 1996 to 2006.
All the comparisons were light-hearted and in a good spirit. Official broadcasters like the Tennis Channel engaging fans with fun posts like the one mentioned above is good for the sport and creates attention in the right way.
Sinner will undoubtedly be happy for any conversation around him to be humorous after the anxiety he faced for several months from testing positive for clostebol at the 2024 Italian Open due to accidental contamination.
The Italian served a three-month suspension that ended on May 4th. Sinner believed he was innocent because he did not know his physiotherapist had accidentally contaminated him at the time, but he accepted the ban to put the nightmare behind him.
Sinner seems noticeably more relaxed since returning to the 2025 Italian Open. He had an excellent first tournament back, finishing runner-up to his rival Carlos Alcaraz. The world No. 1 now hopes to win a maiden title at Roland Garros.
Defending champion Alcaraz is the favorite, but Novak Djokovic's chances should not be ruled out.
He won an incredible 100th ATP title at the Geneva Open a few days ago and started his campaign at Roland Garros with an easy victory against Mackenzie McDonald.
