Roger Federer's agent, Tony Godsick, gave an interesting answer when asked whether Jannik Sinner could become a tennis legend.
Sinner is the current ATP world No. 1 and has undoubtedly established himself as the best hard-court player in the world, winning the last three Grand Slams on the surface, including beating Alexander Zverev in the 2025 Australian Open final.
The Italian has yet to win a major title on clay or grass. He reached the semifinals at the French Open and Wimbledon but has yet to advance to the final or win at either tournament.
Sinner's rival Carlos Alcaraz, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal of this year's Australian Open, won the 2024 French Open and Wimbledon, making him the most significant obstacle to Sinner to triumphing at those events.
Securing all the Grand Slams on the three surfaces is an important part of being among the biggest legends in tennis history. Federer's 2009 French Open title was the most emotional of his career because it meant the Swiss achieved the Career Grand Slam.
Godsick recently spoke about whether Sinner can become a tennis legend, as reported by La Stampa. Federer's former agent said that while Sinner cannot replace Federer or Rafael Nadal yet as global superstars, his professionalism is similar to that of the Swiss legend.
"At the moment, as a global star, he cannot replace Federer or Nadal. But he is loved by the people, he plays a type of tennis that I like a lot, and he knows how to give his best in the moments that matter."
He is unsure whether Sinner will become a legend like Nadal, Federer, or Novak Djokovic but thinks the 23-year-old is taking the proper steps and has a chance of achieving more success.
"I don’t know if he can become a legend like Roger or Rafa, but he is on the right path… he is serious, very professional, he behaves well on the court and does not do stupid things off it… in this he reminds me of Roger."
Godsick's comparison to Federer is interesting because Alexander Zverev said Sinner reminded him of Djokovic after he lost to the world No. 1 in last week's Australian Open final. The German believes his consistency and athleticism are similar to those of the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
A combination of Federer's professionalism and Djokovic's playing style is one that could lead to one of the greatest careers in tennis history. However, Sinner outlined some differences between him and Djokovic when responding to Zverev's comparison.
Alcaraz is often compared to Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. Some argue that he has Federer's shot-making, Nadal's warrior spirit and tenacity, and Djokovic's athleticism. Those factors make the four-time Grand Slam champion a unique talent.
Sinner and Alcaraz have already played several epic matches and their rivalry could become the most memorable since Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer were competing at the same time.
