Alexander Zverev showed a sense of humor while also being honest during a post-match interview at the 2026
Australian Open.
On Tuesday,
Alexander Zverev faced Learner Tien on Rod Laver Arena. The German knew to expect a difficult match after his younger opponent thrashed the three-time runner-up in Melbourne, Daniil Medvedev, in the previous round.
Despite much excellent hitting from Tien, Zverev's vastly superior serve made the difference. He was excellent with that shot from start to finish, and did not get broken once to complete a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, 7-6.
Christopher Eubanks, who retired from professional tennis in November, did an on-court interview with Zverev after the match, which included him asking about the three-time Grand Slam runner-up's brother, Mischa.
Zverev's brother, best known for stunning Andy Murray at the 2017
Australian Open, was an excellent volleyer during his career. That led Eubanks to ask about the No. 3 seed's impressive volleys against Tien and how Mischa would rate them.
In response, Zverev mentioned that he gets asked about his brother, who is on his team, in every interview, and humorously reminded Eubanks that Mischa retired a few years ago.
"Every single on-court interview's about him. I'm playing, I'm here. He used to play, he used to play ten years ago, he was good, we get it. He beat Andy Murray here, yay!"
That only encouraged Eubanks to ask another question about Zverev's family. The two-time
ATP Finals champion has been coached by his father for many years, as well as having Mischa on the team.
Eubanks was curious about whether Zverev, his brother, and father ever get sick of each other because they travel together so often. That was met with a funny answer from Zverev about him having to bear the full financial cost of their time together.
"I get sick of them, but they don’t get sick of me because I pay for everything."
Some think Zverev would benefit from removing his family and getting a new coaching team. At the same time, he has achieved much success with them, and that closeness might help him.
Carlos Alcaraz confirmed that his brother will play a more prominent role in his team
When Carlos Alcaraz surprisingly split with Juan Carlos Ferrero last month, it led to questions about whether the 22-year-old would hire a replacement, even though he had Samuel Lopez as a co-coach with Ferrero in 2025.
Rather than appointing someone new from the outside, Alcaraz announced that his brother Alvaro
would play a more significant role in his team and work with Lopez because the
ATP world No. 1 trusts his judgment and insights.
The development is unexpected, since Alvaro has no prior experience as a coach and was best known last year for giving Carlos a terrible haircut at the US Open, which led Carlos to shave almost all his hair.
Roger Federer had been touted as a possible coach for him,
but he ruled out that possibility. Alcaraz is currently two victories away from achieving the Career Grand Slam at the 2026
Australian Open and will face
Alexander Zverev in the semifinal.
