Coco Gauff's start to the 2025 season couldn't be any better and she continues to add to her win column with every match played at the Australian Open.
The young American player started the season with a trophy win at the United Cup, and she didn't get anywhere close to stopping at the Australian Open.
So far, Gauff won all eight matches she played in 2025 and she also won all 16 sets that she played. On top of that, including the WTA Finals, she's on a 10-match winning streak, and from her last 23 matches, she lost only two, one of which was a dead rubber match for her at the WTA Finals.
She started her season with a win over Leylah Fernandez, and now she bested the Canadian player once again. At the United Cup, Gauff won 6-3, 6-2, and even though this time she lost one more game, she was similarly dominant.
Gauff couldn't get off to a quick start, as she left two break points unused in the third game of the match. That gave Fernandez some breathing room that she needed since she likely knew that her opponent was the big favorite in this match.
At one point in the first set, the Canadian player led 3-2, but she couldn't keep that lead for too long. Gauff served almost perfectly in the first set, and at one point, she was on a streak of 13 consecutive points won on her serve.
That made it very difficult for Fernandez to get even close to break points. On the other hand, she relatively struggled on her serve, and when Gauff got to break point chances again, she didn't miss.
With 94% of points won after her first serve in the opening set, one break was all the WTA World No. 3 needed to win the opening set 6-4 without breaking a sweat.
Gauff started struggling on her second serve in the second set. Although she won all of the points after her second serve that developed into a rally, she hit four double faults, which was a lot.
Still, those double faults weren't too costly to hurt her in the long run. The American player started by breaking her opponent's serve two times, and with a 3-0 lead, she was in a very comfortable position.
She lost her serve once in the second set, but since she had a two-break lead, it didn't hurt her so much. On top of that, she immediately broke back and controlled the remainder of the match from there.
It was another extremely confident and simple win for Gauff, who beat Fernandez 6-4, 6-2, booking a second week at the 2025 Australian Open. Up next, she will need to prepare for a strong opponent.
Although Belinda Bencic got into the fourth round through Naomi Osaka's retirement, the Swiss player has been proving her qualities since returning from pregnancy late last year.
