Caroline Wozniacki has revealed how likely a return to the WTA Tour is after being inactive for over a year.
The Dane's first retirement occurred after the 2020 Australian Open. It was a fitting place to stop since she won her sole Grand Slam title in 2018 after coming close several times, including losing two US Open finals.
Wozniacki and her husband, David Lee, had a daughter in 2021 and a son in 2022. She seemed content with her family life, and a comeback to professional tennis seemed very unlikely.
There was widespread surprise when Wozniacki came out of retirement in 2023, over three years after stepping away from the sport. The former world No. 1's run to the fourth round of that year's US Open, after being away for so long, was impressive.
Wozniacki's last appearance was at the 2024 US Open, reaching the fourth round again. She then stepped away from tennis for a second time after becoming pregnant with her second son, Max, who was born on July 26th, 2025.
The three-time Grand Slam finalist has mostly kept a low profile for the last 12 months, but recently went on to the Nothing Major Podcast, hosted by John Isner, Sam Querrey, Jack Sock, and Steve Johnson.
One of the hosts asked Wozniacki whether she will ever make a second comeback. The fan favorite answered that having three young children makes it unlikely, but did not definitively rule out the possibility of it ever happening.
"No. I think it's a no. If it were up to David (husband David Lee, ed.), he would point out that I have my protected ranking and can play the big tournaments. I still have a long time to decide. If I think I can get back in shape, never say never. But with three small children, it's already a full-time job."
"I have three small children. I want to travel. It's been fun doing TV and I really enjoy it. So I think that's my next step. I like to work a few weeks a year and then relax with my family. It's the perfect balance."
Wozniacki is now 35. Coming back at that age after a lengthy absence seems challenging, but Venus Williams's remarkable return at 45 shows it is not impossible. The tennis legend's first tournament for 2025 was recently announced.

Wozniacki lashed out at a Danish commentator for his comments about her

Peter Bastiansen, the former ATP world No. 224 and a commentator in Denmark for many years, ridiculed the possibility of Wozniacki returning to professional tennis after over a year away, believing it would turn into a parody if it happened.
Wozniacki reacted furiously to Bastiansen's remarks. She blasted him as a clown and said he had bullied her in the media for over 20 years. Bastiansen responded that Wozniacki was entitled to her opinion, preventing a war of words.
While commentators have the right to express their views, Bastiansen's words felt needlessly harsh. He could have expressed it more constructively, and may have wanted controversy to create headlines.
