At the 2025
ATP Finals,
Carlos Alcaraz was deservedly celebrated for finishing as the year-end No. 1, but Sam Querrey's focus drifted to the 22-year-old's attire.
Alcaraz sealed his place at No. 1 until the end of 2025 by overcoming Lorenzo Musetti at the
ATP Finals. Previous group-stage successes against Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz left him needing only one more win.
After the match against Musetti, a ceremony was held to mark Alcaraz's finishing as the year-end No. 1 for the second time. He last achieved that in 2022, a few months after winning his maiden Grand Slam at the 2022 US Open.
For the ceremony, Alcaraz wore a suit jacket with a striped blue-and-white shirt underneath. The Spaniard decided against wearing a tie despite the importance of becoming 2025's No. 1 player.
In an episode of the Nothing Major Podcast, Querrey expressed dissatisfaction with Alcaraz's look and called it a rare instance of the six-time Grand Slam champion not looking suave for such an event.
"Did you guys see Carlos? He got, like, the trophy yesterday on the court for winning, for making number one in the world. Little ceremony. First time I've ever seen him not look super smooth. The suit that he was wearing was, like, meh."
"I'm just saying, like, the hair, anything he does with his hair, you're like, 'All right, Carlos, he's pulling it off.' It was, like, the first time it didn't look perfect."
Querrey compared Alcaraz to Roger Federer, who is one of the most fashionable athletes ever. The American thinks Federer would have worn a tie for the ceremony even if he had played a match earlier that day.
"We're so used to Roger looking, like, absolutely perfect every time he gets, like, an award. Like it's… like just a perfect suit, button-up, tie, like Fed. I don't know. Maybe I'm just used to Fed, who would just, like, wear a tie."
Carlos Alcaraz did not secure a maiden ATP Finals title
On Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner's epic rivalry was renewed in the showpiece match at the 2025 ATP Finals. They have contested the last three Grand Slam finals, two of which Alcaraz won.
The Spaniard could not defeat his rival on home soil in Turin, falling 6-7, 5-7. Alcaraz held a set point in the opener on Sinner's serve, but the world No. 2 found a powerful serve at the opportune moment to fend it off.
The ATP Finals and Australian Open are the most significant titles that Alcaraz has yet to win. After competing in the 2025 Davis Cup Finals, his attention will turn to preparing for the 2026 Australian Open.
Interestingly, the Australian Open is the only Grand Slam where Alcaraz and Sinner have not met. The Italian is the two-time defending champion there
since defeating Alexander Zverev in this year's final.
If they meet in the 2026 Australian Open men's singles final, Alcaraz and Sinner will have played in the most recent final at all four Grand Slams, which would underline their dominance of the ATP Tour.
