The 2025 season is almost here and the best sign of it is the first released entry list, which is for the 2025 Hong Kong Open.
The 2024 season ended only recently, with Jannik Sinner winning the ATP Finals before also sealing the Davis Cup Finals win for Italy. During those weeks, some of the players already rested and started preparing for the 2025 season, which will start already in 2024.
The first official event of the new season is the United Cup, which is a team competition, but everything for that event was announced in advance, including the draw, as obviously, the format is different.
The individual tournaments start three days after the United Cup, with one of the first two being the Hong Kong Open, running from December 30th, 2024, to January 5th, 2025. The tournament will run alongside the 2025 Brisbane International.
The Hong Kong Open is an ATP 250 tournament held at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, and last year, Andrey Rublev lifted the trophy in Hong Kong in what was the first edition of the tournament after being absent from the calendar since 2003.
In 2025, Rublev will return to Hong Kong as a defending champion, but the player he beat in the final, Emil Ruusuvuori, doesn't appear on the entry list, as his ranking was not sufficient to qualify him for the ATP 250 tournament.
In Hong Kong, Rublev will face fierce competition from players who also chose to start their season in Hong Kong instead of traveling to Australia, where they could prepare much closer to the venue of the first Grand Slam of the season.
While this might be a bit untraditional approach due to the added traveling, many players don't mind it, as they are used to traveling all around the world throughout the season.
Joining Rublev in Hong Kong will be the likes of Lorenzo Musetti, Karen Khachanov, and Arthur Fils, who are the other three players from the Top 20 of the rankings who signed up for the event.
All three of them competed at the tournament also last year, and even though neither of them had particular success, it's clear that they liked to start the season this way, which is why they will repeat it also in 2025.
Khachanov, who was the second seed, lost already in his first match to Emil Ruusuvuori. Musetti, seeded sixth, lost his second match to Pavel Kotov, and while then eighth-seeded Fils made it the furthest, he lost in the quarter-finals to the eventual champion Rublev.
Nuno Borges also played at the event in 2024, and he will return in 2025, while the likes of Denis Shapovalov, Brandon Nakashima, Tallon Griekspoor, and Petro Martinez will all make their debut at the tournament.
