The 2025 Brisbane International is one of the first two tournaments of the new season, and the entry list for the ATP 250 event has been released.
While the season officially starts with the United Cup, the individual competitions start three days after that, and the first of the two running simultaneously is the Brisbane International.
The ATP 250 tournament in Brisbane will start already on December 30th, 2024, and will run until January 5th, 2025, ending one week before the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open, starts in Melbourne.
This event should, therefore, provide players with great preparation for the first major of the year, and that is confirmed by the fact that 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic signed up to play in Brisbane.
The Serbian player competed in Brisbane only once, in 2009, losing to Ernests Gulbis in the first round of the competition. This year, he will want to impress his new coach Andy Murray, as this will be their first event together.
Although Djokovic will be the top seed in Brisbane, the field is full of players who could go all the way to win the title. Chief among them are two finalists of the 2024 event, Grigor Dimitrov and Holger Rune.
In 2024, Dimitrov bested Rune in the final to lift his first trophy since 2017, and the young Danish player will certainly want revenge for that final loss.
This year, however, since they will be seeded second and third at the tournament, the two players can meet already before the final, depending on the draw for the 2025 tournament.
One player that might closely follow the draw is Nick Kyrgios. The Australian player will return to the competition for the first time since 2023, and it will be only his second match since the end of the 2022 season.
Since he has to use his protected ranking, Kyrgios won't be seeded in Brisbane, and since he certainly wants to get back to form, he will want to avoid some of the seeded players in the opening rounds.
Still, that doesn't mean that he will avoid opponents that could stun him, as the field is full of high-quality opponents. Reilly Opelka, who is also making a comeback, former World No. 6 Gael Monfils, and 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini are also among the players participating.
Among those seeded, Frances Tiafoe and Sebastian Korda will delight American fans who will choose to travel to Brisbane, while the home crowd will be delighted by the presence of Alexei Popyrin and Jordan Thompson.
