Jannik Sinner might be the best player in the world right now, but according to his coach, Darren Cahill, he can be even better.
Of course, the concept of good and better is rather subjective. Athletes can technically get better always, even when they are at their best, but as many smart people said in the past, you don't have to bet the best, just better than everyone in the given moment, and in tennis specifically, better than the one opponent standing on the other side of the net.
Sinner's 2024 campaign has been in line with that, as he's been clearly better than everybody else, winning three trophies, including the Miami Open. Some would say that overall, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are the better players, but Sinner is better right now, and that's why he's winning.
His coach, Darren Cahill, is certainly proud of what they've achieved this year, but there is room for improvement, according to the Australian, who spoke to media after the 2024 Miami Open final. As scary as it might sound, according to Cahill, Sinner can be a lot better in the future.
"From where he is at the moment, right now he's playing his hand. You can't sugar-coat it. He's playing great, and his level today was fantastic. But he can get better. As evolution goes along and you get a little bit older and stronger and faster and get a bit smarter, all those things are going to start to come into his game."
Sinner has improved a lot already, especially in terms of serve and his hitting. He's not missing as much as before, and his serve has become a lot better. It's just one of the things that they worked on and will keep working on so he can become even better.
"We have been working on improving his serve, improving his transition game, improving his slice backhand to use it as a changeup shot, improving his direction on his forehand, return of serve. You can go through everybody's game."
