Jannik Sinner was criticized after pulling out of the Davis Cup qualifiers in Italy earlier this year, but a few months later, their violins played a different tune.
Sinner has been accused of ducking Davis Cup in the past, and in fairness, he kind of did. He didn't play often and seemingly prioritized his singles career before that, so the criticism had a point.
The same happened earlier this year when Sinner opted not to play for the country in the qualifiers, which was criticized.
It was a pretty important event that Italy barely managed to handle, but qualifying proved crucial as they would end up winning the whole tournament. They won largely thanks to Jannik Sinner, though obviously others contributed as well.
The Italian delivered wins in all matches and was basically the MVP in that winning run. It was significant for both him personally and the country, as he shared after they won.
There wasn't much criticism coming from the media or people in Italy, and the Italian Tennis Federation president, Angelo Binaghi talked about it in a recent interview with Tennis World USA.
Who made a sensationally short-sighted assessment, wrong, as we immediately tried to say. I have maintained from day one that it was legitimate, indeed desirable, to plan the season around the ATP Finals in Turin and Davis Cup Finals in Malaga.- Angelo Binaghi on criticism towards Sinner
The overall year for Italian has been pretty good. From the ATP Finals proving another success to the historic Davis Cup triumph and the emergence of several new players, it's just been a really great year for Italian tennis.
Things will hopefully go similarly next year as the president had some things to say to both Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, the country's biggest stars.
I would like to say to Sinner to not changing anything, absolutely nothing. To Berrettini for having better luck.
