Jannik Sinner continued his 2024 Roland Garros campaign with an important win over veteran Richard Gasquet.
This was a fascinating match because the Italian wasn't really pushing too much at all times. He had moments where he really invested a lot of energy, but for the most part, he seemed quite comfortable.
It's really important because he needs simple matches like this in light of not being 100% healthy yet. Gasquet gave it his all and proved quite tough in the early games of the match, but as the match went on, Sinner was able to win points more easily.
Ultimately, he was just a bit too young, too strong, and too quick on the feet for the home crowd hero, who played fine for what he's capable of at this stage of his career but just not good enough.
The first set was the most competitive because it was when Gasquet had the most energy. As the match continued, the French player clearly became more and more tired, which impacted his play.
Sinner was also quite smart in how he approached the match. He picked his posts really well and attacked exactly when he needed to, and it just worked out really well for him.
The first set was a 6-4 win behind 18 winners from Sinner. The second set was a more simple 6-2 victory for the Italian 11 winners, and the final set was a 6-4 triumph as well behind 10 winners.
It was just a really solid overall performance by Sinner, who looks quite comfortable on the clay despite clearly not being 100% healthy.
