Holger Rune has defended his hot-headed playing style and explained why his temper on the court is important.
Rune has enjoyed a solid start to 2023 and has raced up to seventh in the ATP rankings following success at the Munich Open in April, where the Danish player defeated Botic van de Zandschulp in the final. But, a common theme of Rune's game is his regular outbursts on the court that toe the line between competitiveness and anger.
At the Madrid Open, Rune riled up the crowd once more during his match with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina following a controversial Hawk Eye decision. But, when speaking to the ATP Tennis podcast, the Danish teenager dismissed his hot-headedness as passion.
"I’ve gotten the chance to show my passion on the court and show who I am when I play and I like it you know. It’s part of my game style to have this energy on the court and I feel good when I’m pumped on the court and show some emotions, I like to play this way."
In addition, Rune took time to discuss his preference for clay court competitions. The Danish player has already shown his quality on the surface at Monte-Carlo and in Munich this season and he feels confident about the rest of the clay season.
"When I get onto the clay, at first, I'm very excited because it's going to be longer rallies, you can slide, you get more dirty and stuff. And it's fun, I like it, it's different. But again, I mean, I really like hard courts, I like grass, I like every surface, but clay is very different."
"The bounce is higher and obviously every clay tournament is kind of different because the surface, the weather, everything is different, but it's also a good challenge. You get to adjust a lot but also it's exciting."
