According to
Toni Nadal, who is the uncle of
Rafael Nadal, the Spanish legend is set to compete at the
Roland Garros this year.
Nadal has been historically the best player ever at Roland Garros, dominating the event for over a decade. He has won the tournament 14 times, which is a record that many think might not ever be broken.
The Spaniard won the event last year, and it was that iconic run that featured him taking foot injections before every match and playing the matches without feeling his foot at all.
Casper Ruud was the victim in the final, even though Nadal overcame his archrival Novak Djokovic, who bested him the year before. The question of whether he will participate at the Roland Garros this year has been the question of the season for the Spanish player, because he’s been dealing with an injury since the Australian Open.
It was in the match against Mackenzie McDonald that he sustained a hip injury, which can be rather complicated. It certainly seems like it is, because Nadal has missed every event since then, even though there were speculations about his return. Most recently,
Nadal withdrew from the Madrid Open.
However, according to Rafa's uncle Toni, Nadal should play at Roland Garros, where he would be the defending champion. His uncle spoke to Radio Marca, as per
ElEspanol, and confirmed that Nadal would be playing at the event, which is very good news for both the organizers in Paris and tennis fans overall.
"He would like to be competing now, but it won't be long before that comes. He is going to play in Paris, although it will be important to measure his aspirations there how he will train these next few weeks, and what he can do in Rome."
Toni Nadal also dismissed any suggestions about his nephew's retirement, which have been going on since he’s been pulling out of events left and right. The 62-year-old stated that Nadal is not thinking about it at the moment.
"He is not thinking about retirement, he just wants to recover well and continue competing because he is passionate about this sport."
