Andy Murray has been struggling recently, but according to noted coach Darren Cahill, nobody has the right to tell him to retire.
Murray has seen better days in his tennis career. The Brit is still winless in 2024 and struggling to find a really good rhythm. As tends to happen when he struggles, the talks about retirement pop back up, especially with older players.
Whether he plays good or bad, the same old questions get asked every time he talks to the media. He's probably sick of it by now, but the topic of his retirement will never go away. It won't go away because it's around the corner.
Nobody is under the illusion that Murray has five years to play, and even some of his statements acknowledge that it's closer than ever. Still, according to noted coach Darren Cahill, Murray has earned the right to do it however he wants to. In his mind, nobody really has the right to tell him to retire.
"Andy is one of the greatest competitors our sport has seen because nothing has come easy to him, and he has had to work damn hard for everything that he has achieved in the game. No one has the right to tell him when to hang it up. He can play for as long as he wants, there is no damaging his brand."
Murray is one of the greatest tennis players to have ever lived because everything he did in tennis needs to be put into perspective. Sure, when you look at his numbers, especially Grand Slam numbers, they might not look as impressive as Novak Djokovic's, but he played in the greatest era of tennis with three of the best players ever.
"What he has been able to achieve in his career has been remarkable, considering the opposition he has had."
