Nadal drops to his lowest in ATP Rankings in 73 months as injury woes continue

Rafael Nadal will drop to his lowest in the ATP Rankings in 73 months as he's been unable to compete recently.

The Spaniard's ranking has taken a hit after he was forced to withdraw from tournaments in Doha and Dubai due to a persistent injury. As a result of not being able to add or defend any points, he dropped to his lowest in the ATP Rankings since January 2017, a period of 73 months.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion has played just four matches this season, losing three of them. His injury troubles have been well-documented, and it's clear that he needs some time to recover fully.

Initially, it seemed that the Spaniard will only match his lowest since April 2017, which is seventh place. But since Daniil Medvedev won in Doha and moved five points ahead of Nadal, the Spanish King of Clay will drop to eighth place. In January 2017, he was ranked ninth, but eventually, he finished the season as the world no. 1.

Despite the challenges he's facing, Nadal remains a fighter and he's expected to be back for the 2023 BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells as he's one of the stars on the entry list. He's battled back from injury before, and there's no reason to believe he won't do it again.

If Nadal doesn't compete in Indian Wells and Miami, it's very likely, and almost certain, that he will drop out of the Top 10 for the first time since 2005. For now, it remains to be seen when the Spaniard returns to the tennis courts and if he'll make it in time for the Sunshine Double.

In the meantime, the 36-year-old enjoys time with his family and his newborn son. Moreover, he continues to work on his projects as he recently also welcomed Felix Auger-Aliassime to the Rafa Nadal Academy.
