Nick Kyrgios once met a fan at the US Open who had alopecia universalis, the same condition his brother has, and it was a very touching moment he recounted recently on social media.
Kyrgios has a couple of siblings, one of whom is a brother, Chritos, with a condition called alopecia universalis. It’s not something that can be cured, but it’s not something that has much of an impact on the quality of a person's life, either.
It’s still something that Kyrgios is very familiar with, having had a brother and observing him deal with it up close. So when he got a chance to meet a fan who had the same condition, it was a nice moment for him.
The Australian player talked about that moment in a post he made, in which he explained how that interaction left the fan changed. Kyrgios often talks about the humane aspect, which to him is the most important bit, just that human-to-human interaction, like this one was.
"US Open a couple years ago…. This young fan was sitting courtside and watched my entire match. After I finished, I went up to him and noticed he was nervous, and as I approached him, he was a little insecure about his condition."
"I told him my brother had the exact same condition, and he lives a beautiful life. As soon as I told him this, his eyes lit up, and I could tell from that moment on he had a different outlook, and he didn’t feel alone. One of my favourite moments in my entire career, blessed someone captured this moment."
Kyrgios shared a picture of that encounter on his social media alongside the description of it, with the fan having a big, bright smile on their face. Currently,
the Australian is away from the tennis courts. He's preparing for a comeback after undergoing surgery earlier this year.
