Karen Khachanov’s stay in Hamburg took a turn for the worse when his hotel room was robbed while he competed at the 2022 Hamburg Open.

Khachanov made his return to tennis at the Hamburg European Open, and so far, it’s been a pretty good run for the Russian. He wasn’t able to compete at Wimbledon due to being banned as a Russian player, but he was allowed to compete in Hamburg.

His return saw him battle past Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round, winning the match 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(2), and then beating also Fabio Fognini in the second round, 6-3, 7-5.

With two wins, the Russian is now in the quarter-finals, which is a good result, but something dramatic happened off the court. According to a report by RIA Novosti in his native Russia, his hotel room in Hamburg was robbed.

The safe in the room was also emptied; however, Khachanov himself should be safe, according to the report from the Russian publication.

"Karen is playing at a tournament in Hamburg this week, his game has improved, and he feels great, but on Thursday an extremely unpleasant event happened. Karen’s room was robbed, they even pulled everything out of the safe."

According to the report, he wasn’t present in the room when the robbery occurred; however, it’s still a distressing experience. He has a big matchup with Carlos Alcaraz coming up, and this is the type of thing that could prove a significant distraction.

It also raises concerns about the players' security, which isn’t a good look for anyone involved. Situations like this are extremely rare, and while Khachanov wasn’t harmed in any way aside from material losses, it does call into question the safety protocols employed by the ATP and the event organizers.

As tennis history has shown, governing bodies can sometimes be slow to react until something bad happens, as highlighted by the infamous case of Monica Seles and her on-court stabbing.
