Jannik Sinner vs Felix Auger-Aliassime: 2024 Madrid Open - Preview & Prediction

| by Zachary Wimer

Jannik Sinner is playing really solid tennis at the 2024 Madrid Open this week, but so is Felix Auger-Aliassime, who will challenge him in the quarter-final.

This year hasn't been good for the Canadian, who struggled with tennis until this ATP Masters 1000 event. This tournament has been hugely impressive from him so far, including the most recent win over a tired Casper Ruud.

He's hitting the serve really well, the forehand is working really well, and the return is doing a lot of damage as well. Sinner has been tremendous, both this year and this week. However, he's carrying an injury, which could be a huge problem if he has to spend a lot of time on the tennis courts.

Head-to-head:

Sinner and Auger-Alaissime have played against each other only two times, and both times, the Canadian player won. That's pretty interesting because most people would guess wrong if you asked them the question.

Both of those matches were played a while ago, much before Sinner's tremendous rise in the past 12 months. Funnily enough, one of those matches was played in Madrid, so there seems to be something that Auger-Aliassime finds every year in the Spanish capital.

It makes stylistic sense because this game is built around a good serve, and the courts in Madrid benefit great servers.

Prediction:

To be completely fair, if Auger-Aliassime wins this match, then that would be a big surprise. The Canadian is not on the same level as Sinner right now, but he can still win a match against him.

I wouldn't be that surprised to see it happen because Sinner seems unwell. I'm not sure whether it gets better with a day off, but I certainly think the Canadian has the game to win this match now.

Prediction: Felix Auger-Aliassime to win in three sets.
