Last year's Australian Open saw many players who were taking part in Netflix's Break Point show lose early at the event, but Holger Rune thinks it's stupid as he cruised in his first-round match.
The Netflix curse was in full swing last year because many players who took part in the series lost early in the event or were forced to withdraw before. It wasn't just one or two players either, as fans saw multiple players in both the men's and women's draw losing early.
Some players even joked about the curse after they got beaten. There is a season two of the show, and plenty of players who took part are playing this year. Rune took part in the second season of Break Point, and he won his opening match at the Australian Open.
Speaking after the match, the Dane dismissed any notion of a Netflix curse as stupid because, in his mind, it has nothing to do with that, even though the first episode of season 2 of the series was called 'The Curse.'.
He used the example of Novak Djokovic and how he would still win as much even if he did a series like that one.
"I think it's stupid, to be honest. No offense. I think it's nothing to do with that. I think Novak could do ten Netflix series and still win 20 Grand Slams or 24. It's really something that it's not about that. I think Sabalenka did a few already, and she won Australian Open last year. I don't know. Yeah, that's it."
Rune is correct that it has nothing to do with that, but people like symbolism, and you can find symbolism in most things if you look hard enough. We'll see how far his belief will carry him or whether the curse does claim him in the end.
Rune will face French talent Arthur Cazaux in the next round of his Australian Open campaign.
