'I'm Healthy': Berrettini Announces Surprising Withdrawal From Munich Open

by Zachary Wimer

Matteo Berrettini won't be playing at the 2024 Munich Open, but this time, it's not an injury that would be hindering him.

The Italian returned to tennis fairly recently at the ATP Challenger in Phoenix, which ran in the second week of the Indian Wells Open. He played a few matches there and then made his comeback on the ATP Tour at the Miami Open.

That didn't go well, as he lost early, but he made a strong comeback at the Marrakech Open, winning his first trophy in a long time. The Italian then played in Monte-Carlo but was stunned early, probably due to the fatigue carried over from Morocco.

The plan was to play at the BMW Open in Munich next, and he was excited about it, but it won't be happening as he announced on Instagram that he withdrew from the event. He explained that his team felt that it would be better if he focused on the Madrid Open and the Italian Open in Rome instead.

"After the result in Monte-Carlo, I was very excited and eager to get back on court in Munich. However, my team felt it was most beneficial to my comeback and season to have another short training block ahead of the tournaments in Madrid and Rome."

If Berrettini had opted to play in Munich, Madrid, and the Italian Open, there would have been over a month of constant tournaments for him. It would have been a bit too much too early, so focusing on the two ATP Masters 1000 tournaments makes sense from his point of view.

"I am healthy and feel good, and I can't wait to get back on-court in Madrid. Very sorry to the tournament and tennis fans in Munich. Thanks for the support and see you all soon"

He's always greatly benefitted from the altitude in Madrid and performed well there, with the Italian Open being obviously a hugely important event for him.
