Rafael Nadal's place as a sporting legend has been demonstrated by tributes pouring in from significant names across different sports after he announced his retirement from tennis.
Nadal had spent the vast majority of the last two years attempting to recover from numerous physical issues, the most notable of which was a severe hip injury he sustained at the 2023 Australian Open.
The Spaniard, in characteristic style, initially refused to give up on returning to a level good enough to challenge for the biggest tournaments. He managed to play at this year's French Open and the Olympics but was far past his prime.
After much careful consideration, Nadal announced his retirement. Deciding to no longer compete in the sport he loves was undoubtedly challenging, but it seems sensible after all his injuries.
Nadal will get a memorable send-off in his last appearance at the Davis Cup Finals on home soil in Malaga. There is the exciting prospect of him playing doubles with Carlos Alcaraz again after the duo competed together at the Olympics.
The 38-year-old's rivalry with Roger Federer was among the best in sporting history. Some of their memorable encounters include the 2007 and 2008 Wimbledon finals and the 2009 and 2017 Australian Open finals.
Despite their rivalry on the court, the duo had a respect that later became a close friendship. That was shown by Federer playing doubles with Nadal in his final professional match at the Laver Cup.
Unsurprisingly, Federer paid a warm tribute to Nadal once the news of his upcoming retirement broke, thanking Nadal and saying it had been an honor to compete against and alongside him during their careers.
"What a career, Rafa! I always hoped this day would never come. Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your incredible achievements in the game we love. It’s been an absolute honour."
Nadal is a big supporter of Real Madrid, which led him to become friends with Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest football players ever and the best player in Real Madrid's illustrious history.
Ronaldo shared a heartwarming social media post about Nadal. He praised his dedication and passion and said it was an honor to call the Spaniard his friend.
"Rafa, what an incredible race you’ve had! Your dedication, passion, and incredible talent have inspired millions around the world. It has been an honor to witness your journey and to be able to call you a friend. Congrats on an amazing career! Enjoy your retirement."
Kylian Mbappe, the current Real Madrid player, also congratulated Nadal, saying he had set an outstanding example as a player and a person.
"Congratulations on your career Rafa, an example as a player and a person. Enjoy your retirement. You will always be a legend."
Former Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn was another notable athlete who paid tribute to the retiring Spaniard, thanking him for all the memories and saying he would always be a legend.
"Muchísimos gracias Rafa!!! Thank you for all of the incredible memories!! Forever a legend!!"
