Djokovic Told New Coach Can't 'Make That Much Difference' After Ivanisevic Split

Novak Djokovic parted ways with longtime coach Goran Ivanisevic last month, but a coaching change will not significantly affect his career, according to noted tennis coach Rick Macci.

Last month, Djokovic created headlines by letting go of his longtime coach, Goran Ivanisevic. The duo worked together for about six years, and the 24-time major winner won many trophies under the Croatian coach.

Ultimately, all things came to an end, and they made the decision to part ways. The move confused many tennis pundits, who found the timing very odd, especially with the summer quickly approaching.

Recently speaking to Sportskeeda, noted tennis coach Rick Macci admitted that he doesn't see coaching making a huge difference in Djokovic's career.

"Right now, I don’t think a coach can make that much difference. It’s even, you know, when Serena already had 12 Grand Slams in her pockets and she started being coached."

"I think it can help you motivation wise and strategy. But, listen, he is on third base. He is heading towards home. I don’t think a coach can make that much difference."

Djokovic has already debuted a new interim coach, former Serbian doubles player Nenad Zimonjic. They know each other well, having played together for a few years in the Davis Cup. Macci mentioned that familiarity was something that probably influenced his decision.

"But, if it’s a subtle little thing, how they say it, why they say it and can get you to do something, because it comes down to key moments, especially in men’s tennis. He knew the guy he selected."

"Obviously, they go way back in time and at the end of the day, he is the one out there pulling a trigger. So, it really comes down to him and if he stays healthy, I think he can win a handful of more Grand Slams."
