Novak Djokovic continued his
Roland Garros march as the Serbian easily beat Juan Pablo Varillas from Peru to advance to the quarter-final.
It's his 17th quarter-final at the event, and he booked it in style, cruising comfortably. The tennis he showed is some of the best tennis he has played since the Australian Open, where he equalled Rafael Nadal for most Grand Slams ever (22).
A triumph in Paris would see him emerge at the top of the list by himself, which was his goal before coming to Paris. With Wimbledon around the corner, Djokovic could further extend the record to 24 at Wimbledon. When it comes to the match, Djokovic enjoyed it.
"Great energy on the court from the crowd and myself. I really enjoyed it. The best performance so far at the tournament, coming exactly at the right time, coming into the second week, playing another quarter-final where it’s going to get tougher. I like the way I’m playing and feeling, and looking forward to a new challenge."
Djokovic is slowly showing signs of improvement, which is exactly how he drew it up before the event: slowly play himself into shape, growing his confidence with every match.
One more match and he will likely face Carlos Alcaraz, which could be the biggest challenge he could possibly face. For him, it's good that he's feeling the best he's felt in months.
"I feel better than I did in the last couple of months. In the last seven-10 days, I’ve felt the best I’ve felt since the Australian Open. That’s good, I just have to keep going and not allow myself to think too far ahead, but I’m on a good path."
The Serbian will first have ot beat Karen Khachanov, who is a tricky player, but one he easily beat numerous times before.
