Carlos Alcaraz was surprised to encounter Maria Sharapova in a lift during the 2023 Canadian Open, but the 20-year-old spoke positively about the impromptu meeting.
Alcaraz is currently competing at the Canadian Open, his first competition since he defeated Novak Djokovic to win the Wimbledon title in July. The Spanish player has made a steady start on the court as he defeated Ben Shelton in straight sets in the second round and will face Polish player Hubert Hurkacz in the next round.
Despite on-court stability, a big surprise awaited Alcaraz off the court as he met Sharapova before the victory over Shelton. The official Canadian Open Twitter account posted a picture of the pair on its channel and Alcaraz told reporters that he was delighted to meet the five-time Grand Slam winner, even if the encounter wasn't planned.
"I watch her, you know, a lot of matches. She was a great tennis player. She was probably one of the best player in the world."
"And I was in shock because I didn't expect her to be here in Toronto. And she was first in the lift and it was, She is Maria or no? You know what I mean?"
Like Alcaraz, Sharapova also won Wimbledon at a young age. The former WTA player lifted the Wimbledon title in 2004 and she went on to win the Roland Garros twice as well as the US Open and Australian Open across a 17-year career.
Although Alcaraz did not reveal the exact details of the duo's conversation, he did say that he enjoyed the meeting with one of the greatest WTA players of all time.
"But it was great to meet her and know that she's going really well, and, you know, she's life right now. And talk a little bit with her, it was really nice."
