Carlos Alcaraz was surprised by Ben Shelton's power when the two faced off during the Canadian Open second round.

Eventually, Alcaraz defeated the American youngster across two sets with a 6-3, 7-5 victory. In the process, Alcaraz extended his winning streak to 14 consecutive matches as the world number aims to end an impressive 2023 season on a high note.

However, it wasn't always plain sailing for the 20-year-old who told reporters in his post-match press conference that he was stunned by some of Shelton's powerful shots. But, the Spanish player also admitted that he enjoyed the contest and how the American played on the front foot.

"Well, he's a really nice player. You know, he hits the ball. You know, honestly, I never played against someone that hit the ball as hard as he hit. It's something crazy. You know, some serves at 235. Honestly, I almost broke my string."
"And, you know, he's really, really tough. So he's a real aggressive one. He didn't let me play my game that is aggressive going to the net. So he did it almost every time. So he's really nice."

It was high praise for Shelton, who also spoke positively about Alcaraz and his rise in tennis before the encounter between the pair in Canada. Before the clash, Shelton explained how Alcaraz is already the player to emerge who will be at the top of the next generation of young tennis players.

The match at the Canadian Open was the first contest between the two players in an ATP competition. However, despite going 1-0 up in head-to-head matches, Alcaraz is predicting more upcoming battles between himself and Shelton in the near future.

"I mean, he's going to be over there a long time, I'm sure. We are going to play so many matches more."
