Carlos Alcaraz explained that he tries to watch as much tennis as possible when he's off the court, including those involving world number one Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz made a strong start to his 2024 Australian Open campaign with a straight-set victory over Richard Gasquet in round one. The second-round clash with Lorenzo Sonego was less straightforward as the world number two required four sets and two tie breaks to secure victory.
Things haven't been plain sailing for Djokovic either, as he navigated a tricky first-round encounter against teenager Dino Prizmic and faced a tough test against Australian player Alexei Popyrin in the second round.
Following his second-round win, Alcaraz admitted that he had been following other players' matches whilst off-court and that he chose to watch Djokovic's encounter with Popyrin.
"Well, I like to watch all the matches when I can obviously. Yeah, I follow every result. If I have the chance to watch some matches, I do it. For example, I watched the match, the Djokovic match, last night."
However, the 20-year-old did not specify whether he was watching in case of meeting Djokovic in the later rounds or whether it was just a leisure activity. Due to both players being seeded number one and two at the Australian Open, they would not meet until the final, if they can navigate this far in the tournament.
When expanding on his tennis viewing as a spectator, Alcaraz said he mainly watches other players simply because he has a love of the sport, rather than to scout his potential opponents.
"When I'm around here, I always in the locker room or I always focus on the TVs if I can catch some points from the matches. I'm a huge fan of tennis. Every time I can to watch some matches, I do it."
