Just like last year, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-final of the Roland Garros, securing a spot in the semi-final against Jannik Sinner.
Alcaraz was widely considered to be the favorite for this match simply because fans in Paris saw this matchup also last year, and it was a pretty easy win for the Spaniard. It's a bad matchup for the Greek player generally because the way his opponent plays puts a lot of pressure on his backhand, which can't sustain it for the most part.
Alcaraz has a variety of ways to attack Tsitsipas, and he generally has no problems doing so. He never lost to the Greek player before this match, which painted a clear picture of the matchup.
The first set certainly confirmed all of that because Alcaraz broke early and then added another break late to win it 6-3. He didn't have any issues early in the second set either, as he broke his opponent's serve, a break, which he lost a bit later after some careless play, but for the most part.
The second set was decided in the tie-break, which featured some minor drama. Tsitsipas was not happy with Alcaraz's grunting during points, which he complained about to the umpire during a changeover when he was down 1-5, after missing a shot, allegedly because of the 21-year-old's extended grunt.
The Spaniard responded with another grunt on the return in the very next rally, continuing to chip away, winning the tie-break 7-3. The final set didn't offer anything new.
Tsitsipas held on for a while, but the Spaniard got the break he needed midway through, which proved enough. There was also some minor drama in this set.
Tsitsipas hit a smash very close to Alcaraz's legs and seemingly didn't apologize while his opponent looked around expecting an apology. In the end, it was a simple win for Alcaraz: 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-4, and now, he'll play against Jannik Sinner for a spot in the final.
