Carlos Alcaraz once again elected to skip over the Middle Eastern stretch and play in South America on clay, and he talked about it ahead of his return at the 2024 Argentina Open.
The Spaniard first made his way to South America last year as he needed matches. The calculations were simple. He hadn't played up until the Argentina Open due to an abdominal injury that he sustained at the Paris Masters the year before, so he needed matches to get fit for playing.
The fields were generally weaker during the Golden Slam, and that was the point. He would be assured of more matches down there than in the Middle East or Europe, where bigger events are played.
The experience was so nice that Alcaraz decided to come back again this year, and he talked about it at the press conference ahead of the tournament.
"Last year I came here because I hadn’t played many matches, I was unable to play Australia. This year I’m here for a good reason. I loved it last year. I won, but I’d been wanting to come to Buenos Aires and the tournament for some time."
"Juan Carlos [Ferrero] won here, many Spaniards have come here, and I’d been told it was an amazing tournament and I was able to experience it last year. The people are wonderful. The vibes you get here are very special, the energy is special, and I wanted to come back.
Once again, he will be facing a weaker field, and he's by far the best player in the draw. That makes it very likely that he'll leave the city with yet another trophy, and that's certainly not a bad confidence booster.
In the first round of the ATP 250 tournament, the 20-year-old will start against Camilo Ugo Carabelli.
