Alcaraz Addresses Challenge Of Playing Australian Open Without His Coach

by Zachary Wimer

Carlos Alcaraz will be without his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, at the 2024 Australian Open in Melbourne, and it's pretty tough as he considers him a second father.

Former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero has worked with Alcaraz all of his professional career and even before that. The Spaniard is basically a product of the Ferrero Academy near Murcia, where Alcaraz grew up.

They're very close as Ferrero travels with him to most events, but he won't be in Melbourne because of a surgery, and it will affect Alcaraz. He's dealt with it before, as he even won some events without his coach by his side, such as Queen's Club last year.

Even so, the Australian Open is a Grand Slam event. It's a big event, and it's going to be difficult to navigate without a very important person for Alcaraz. Ferrero is much more than just a coach to him, he's a second father figure to him.

"Well, it's tough not being with him. Obviously he travel almost 100% of the tournaments. Probably he miss just one or two last year. It's going to be difficult to approach a big tournament without him."

He's not alone, though, as he has Samuel Lopez with him, a very good tennis coach who used to work with his now coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero. As Alcaraz explained ahead of the event, he's fully comfortable with him and trusts him.

"I have Sam with me that is a great coach as well. He was coach of Juan Carlos when he was playing. I trust him. I believe in him. Juan Carlos, as well. I mean, I think I can learn a lot from him, as well. Let's see how is going to be. As I said, I trust him 100%."

We'll see if he can add another event without his primary coach being in attendance. It would be a big one.
