The 2024 Swiss Indoors in Basel is one of the final two ATP 500 tournaments of the season, and the draw for the event has been unveiled.
Running from October 21st to 27th, the Swiss Indoors is played during the same week as the Vienna Open, which will mark the end of Dominic Thiem's career. The draw for that event has also been released.
The Swiss Indoors is one of the oldest tournaments on the ATP calendar. It was first played in 1970, and several high-profile players have since won it.
Home hero Roger Federer won the tournament an incredible ten times, the last of which was in 2019. Novak Djokovic, John McEnroe, Juan Martin Del Potro, and Boris Becker have also secured the title in Basel.
As usual, many top players are in the draw for this year's Swiss Indoors, with many interesting opening-round matches and potential matchups in the later rounds.
Andrey Rublev is the No. 1 seed at the tournament but has been placed in a challenging quarter of the draw. The ten-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist, who recently revealed he almost had his testicle amputated, plays Nuno Borges in the first round.
Rublev could face Marin Cilic in the following round. A couple of weeks ago, the 2014 US Open champion made headlines by becoming the lowest-ranked ATP champion ever at the Hangzhou Open, showing how dangerous he still is.
Two possible quarterfinal opponents for Rublev stand out. One of them is Ben Shelton, whose huge serve and powerful hitting could be particularly dangerous in an indoor hardcourt tournament.
The other is Stan Wawrinka, who defeated Rublev two days ago in the quarterfinal of the Stockholm Open. However, the 39-year-old has struggled to perform at his home tournament throughout his career.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is the highest-ranked seed in the other quarter in the top half of the draw. He starts his tournament against Francisco Cerundolo and will face either Alexander Bublik or a qualifier if he makes it to the second round.
Arthur Fils and Jiri Lehecka are possible quarterfinal opponents for Tsitsipas. Lehecka beat the Greek two days ago in the Stockholm Open quarterfinal and will play Roberto Bautista Agut in the final.
In the other half of the draw, No. 2 seed Casper Ruud has been drawn against Bautista Agut, although it is uncertain whether the 36-year-old Spaniard will compete in Basel after his run to the final in Stockholm.
Ruud's quarter is very tough. The three-time Grand Slam runner-up could play Denis Shapovalov in the second round before possible quarterfinal matchups against the defending Swiss Indoors champion Felix Auger-Aliassime or the huge-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
In the second quarter of the bottom half, Holger Rune, fresh from competing at the Six Kings Slam exhibition event, has been drawn against Nicolas Jarry in the opening round of this year's tournament in Basel.
Ugo Humbert is a possible quarterfinal opponent for Rune. The Frenchman's game suits indoor hardcourts, as he showed by winning the Moselle Open last year.
