The 2024 Estoril Open will mark the start of the European clay swing and will be played from April 1st to 7th in the beautiful Portuguese Riviera.
Known for its stylish and sophisticated tourist facilities, the first week of April will see a herd of tennis players flock to Estoril to compete in an ATP 250 tournament on clay. The entry list was recently revealed.
Last year, Casper Ruud won the title on his debut. It proved to be his only silver lining of the 2023 season. Unless he can pull off a surprise win at one of the March Masters in either Indian Wells or Miami, then Ruud will have completed a whole year since his last title success.
That is because he has signed up to play in this tournament for a second time and will be in the tournament. Recently, he rejoined the ATP's Top 10 after making back-to-back finals in Los Cabos and Acapulco.
The top seed will be Poland's Hubert Hurkacz, who, like Ruud, is also a Top 10 player. They'll be joined by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Lorenzo Musetti, Arthur Fils, last year's finalist Miomir Kecmanovic, Dominik Koepfer, and Daniel Altmaier among the seeds.
Since the tournament was incepted in 2015, a European player has won each edition of the Estoril Open except in 2022, when Argnetina's Sebastian Baez tore the script.
Those looking to follow in the footsteps of Baez include Pedro Cachin, Cristian Garin, and Federico Coria, who all hail from South America. This tournament will also bid farewell to Joao Sousa, who has been granted a wild card.
The 34-year-old is a former champion and announced in February that he would retire from professional tennis at his home tournament in Estoril. Two-time Roland Garros finalist Dominic Thiem is making a rare appearance on the ATP Tour, hoping to rekindle his glory days in the presence of new coach Mate Delic.
Two more wild cards have yet to be revealed, while four players will enter the draw from qualifying. Be sure to check the complete entry list below.
