The 2023 Winston-Salem Open is a very unique ATP 250 tournament, and the draw just reflects the uniqueness of the competition.
It's not every day that players can compete in a 48-player draw at an ATP 250 tournament, but the Winston-Salem Open, which is the last tournament before the 2023 US Open, makes it possible as players fine-tune their form.
One of those players is the top seed Borna Coric. The Croatian won the Cincinnati Masters last year, but he lost early this year, and he will drop out of the Top 20 in the ATP Rankings as a result of not defending the title.
Coric hasn't been enjoying the best period, as he also deleted his Instagram account to probably avoid negative comments, but he will get a chance to get back on track in Winston-Salem. As the top 16 seeded players have a bye, he's also one of them, starting against either a qualifier or Rinky Hijikata in the second round of the tournament.
There are a few more players that will want to get back on track at this event, and another name is Dominic Thiem. The 2020 US Open champion is yet to start winning on a regular basis, and the 2023 Winston-Salem Open may help him to do that.
He'll play against Arthur Rinderknech from France in the first round, and if he wins, the eighth-seeded Botic van de Zandschulp awaits in round number two. Another player getting back on track is Jack Draper.
The Brit has been away from the ATP Tour for three months, but he recently competed at an ATP Challenger Event in Winnipeg. Now it's a return to the main circuit for Draper, but his first round will be a difficult one, taking on Nuno Borger. If he wins, the second round will prove even more challenging, facing the second-seeded Tallon Griekspoor.
Also, Sebastian Korda will want to prove his qualities, and the third-seeded American will have a chance to observe one of his opponents before playing, as he will start in the second round against the winner of an all-French duel between Benjamin Bonzi and Alexandre Muller.
