Caroline Wozniacki will play at the 2024 Charleston Open as she leads the list of players who received wild card entries into the WTA 500 event.
The clay-court tournament in Charleston is pretty popular among players and the only one played on green clay on the WTA Tour. It's a special type of clay that plays more like a hard court than actual red clay, so it's a nice transition for most players.
Instead of jumping on red clay immediately, players choose this middle ground and then gradually transition to red clay. Wozniacki will be there this year before traveling to Europe for the Billie Jean King Cup and before the Tour completely shifts to clay.
She didn't enter the draw the traditional way but rather got a wild card, leading the list of players who got wild card entries into the WTA 500 event. It's a pretty interesting list of wild cards, as there were four of them.
Wozniacki got the first one, another wild card went to Beatriz Haddad Maia, while native player Shelby Rogers also received a wild card. Rising star Clervie Ngounoue, who won the Girls Wimbledon last year, also received a wild card, with Bob Moran, President of Beemok Sports & Entertainment, happy about the field they managed to attract.
"We are excited to have an impressive lineup of wild cards this year, including former World No. 1 and past champion Caroline Wozniacki, Brazil’s Top 20 trailblazer Beatriz Haddad Maia, and the incredibly promising American young talent, Clervie Ngounoue."
We're only a few days away from that event, which begins on March 30th and should be packed with many great players attending. For Wozniacki, it's a trip to Europe after that, which will be her first without her family.
It will also mark her return to the Billie Jean King Cup, representing Denmark in ties, which will be played in Portugal.
