Venus Williams is back at Wimbledon, for the first time since 2021, and she talked about the nightmare that her rehab proved to be.
Venus Williams has always been iconic. Ever since she first appeared on the WTA Tour and to this day, Venus didn't change. She still has the same burning passion she always had and she still has a colorful hairstyle. It's her first Wimbledon since 2021 as she missed last year due to injuries.
She nearly missed this one as well after sustaining an injury earlier this year at the Australian Open. She worked very hard to make herself ready and returned at the Libema Open not too long ago. It was a valiant effort but a loss in the end.
She then made it to Birmingham and won a match there and now she's back at Wimbledon, excited to be back, after a difficult rehab. The body doesn't heal as fast as it once did at 43 and that's why she described the rehab as a nightmare.
A nightmare -- and a terribly difficult rehab. I haven’t played a lot of matches in the last few years -- and not by choice. So I wanted to be [playing] and I couldn’t. I put my head down and put even more work in and got myself in a much better position.
It's been tough as her last winning season came in 2019 when she won 19 out of 34 matches. She was 2-12 the following year, 3-9 the year after, and 0-4 last year. She's 2-3 this year with a really tough draw for what might be the last time she plays the event.
She didn't give any indication of potentially retiring this year but many, like her former coach, assume it's going to happen. As she said in the press conference 'That's life'.
That's life. You gotta deal with life and I've dealt with my life and most of the time I come out on top.
