Bianca Andreescu made it to the third round of the 2023 Wimbledon after beating Anhelina Kalinina.
The 23-year-old Canadian had a difficult start at this year's Wimbledon. She had to wait multiple days for her first-round match, eventually beating Anna Bondar in three sets to advance. However, because of the previous delay, Andreescu had to play immediately the next day.
Taking on the 26th-seeded Anhelina Kalinina, the 2019 US Open champion met the Ukrainian for the first time on the WTA Tour. She expressed her frustration over having to wait multiple days, but Andreescu dealt with it well.
In the first set of the match, the World No. 50 broke her opponent's serve multiple times, winning the set comfortably 6-2 to take an early lead. Andreescu started well also in the second set, leading 4-2 and having another break point.
But the Canadian then lost the lead, losing five consecutive games and the second set 4-6. Moreover, Kalinina managed to break her opponent's serve in the third set, leading 5-2 and having the victory at the palm of her hand.
Yet, Andreescu didn't give up. She broke back to to level the score and eventually took the third set into a tie-break. At Wimbledon, the deciding set has to be decided in a super tie-break.
The Canadian had a superb start into the super tie-break, taking an early lead 7-1 and never looking back. Although, Kalinina managed to recover some of those mini-breaks, it wasn't enough as Andresscu won the match 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(7) to reach the Wimbledon third round for the first time in her career.
Playing for the spot in the fourth round, the Canadian will likely face a very challenging opponent. The last year's finalist and also the sixth seed at this event, Ons Jabeur from Tunisia is playing against Zhuoxuan Bai from China as the winner will take on Andreescu.
