'Misunderstanding': Medvedev On Azarenka's Booing Incident

| by Kadir Macar

The booing incident after the Victoria Azarenka - Elina Svitolina match at Wimbledon is still one of the main topics and Daniil Medvedev was asked about it.

Daniil Medvedev hasn't had any issues with the London crowd so far this year, event though he has a long history of clashing with crowds. It's not something he wants to keep doing hoping to leave a positive legacy after he retires.

In that sense, it's pretty fortunate that there aren't top Ukrainian players on the ATP Tour right now because Medvedev is not facing any handshake controversy. Victoria Azarenka did as she was booed following her match with Elina Svitolina as the Ukranian doesn't shake hands with Russian or Belarusian players in solidarity with the people back home.

It's an unfortunate occurrence that Svitolina was hoping to avoid but ultimately the crowd didn't let it go. Medvedev was asked about it following his win over Jiri Lehecka and the Russian called it a big misunderstanding.

I think big misunderstanding. It's very pity for Vika because she lost 11-9 on the tiebreaker. It's brutal for anyone that loses a third-set tiebreaker, deciding set tiebreaker is brutal. As she said, I actually liked her response on the press conference, she respected the decision of Svitolina, about not shaking hands.

I think the crowd that comes, Court 1 is what, maybe 10,000 people. I actually don't know. They're not all going to know the story behind this. They just saw Vika not shaking hands. That's why I think they booed her. I liked her response where she said it was a great match and let's talk about tennis.

Medvedev has a fair point which is why Svitolina argued for the event or the governing bodies to release a statement of explanation though Wimbledon immediately dismissed it. It's unfortunate that the event wouldn't extend that olive branch to the players because Azarenka didn't deserve to be booed after that match.

I think it's a pity for sure for her that she got booed, and probably for no reason. But I think the people didn't know the story behind it, and that's why it happened.
