Coco Gauff had some big stars in attendance to watch her play at the 2023 US Open, and she was keen to win her match.
Gauff plays for herself, and wanting to win stems from her competitive spirit. Even so, she didn't want to mess up with some big names in attendance to watch her play, and she didn't, turning around the match against Elise Mertens.
The American has a big following in celebrity circles, with her win over Elise Mertens being watched by fellow athlete Jimmy Butler and music star Justin Bieber. The latter captured Gauff's attention many years ago, and she's been a big fan ever since.
As a fellow athlete, Jimmy Butler has the adoration of Gauff as one of the top players in the NBA whose Miami Heat played in the NBA Finals just months ago. Butler has been a big fan of tennis following Carlos Alcaraz since meeting him at the Miami Open earlier this year.
When it comes to playing in front of celebrities, Gauff still finds it pretty crazy, especially when she saw Justin Bieber, who was also joined by her good friend Frances Tiafoe in attendance for a while.
Yeah, it's crazy. I've come to the Open for years. Being a fan, just looking in the crowd to see who's coming, looking in the president box, the suites, to see who's there, now being a player, it's really crazy.
I was definitely starstruck with Justin Bieber. 'Never Say Never' was like the first, I think one of my favorite songs when I was a kid. Then 'Baby, Oh, Baby'. I could go through all his songs. Then Hailey, too, coming. I guess it was a little date night for them, which was really cool.
While it's still somewhat crazy to Gauff, it's definitely a cool experience, being recognised like that. She was very happy to see that but, more importantly, to actually win the match and extend her stay at the US Open. Let's see who shows up for the next one.
It's a really cool experience. Yeah, I'm just happy I guess and really honored.
