After Iga Swiatek smashed her opponent in two sets at the 2024 Roland Garros, Coco Gauff followed it up by smashing her opponent on the same court.
It was a pretty swift day for the ladies on the Court Philippe-Chatrier on Sunday as Swiatek smashed her opponent 6-0 6-0, and Gauff followed it up with a swift win for herself.
The American's opponent was Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who had a crazy week of tennis in Paris but clearly wasn't on the same level in this match. Gauff has been pretty solid so far in Paris, and this win only solidified that further.
Everything points to another semi-final between Gauff and Swiatek, but let's not get too ahead of ourselves. The opening set of Gauff's fourth-round match was really quick, just 25 minutes, and Gauff won it 6-1.
The Italian had the right idea to attack and push the 20-year-old, but she didn't quite execute that plan well. She missed too much to remain competitive, and the third seed's solid display ensured the 6-1 scoreline.
The second set opened with the players trading breaks, which isn't that unusual for Gauff. The American breaks the opponent's serve often, especially on clay, but drops her own serve pretty frequently as well.
After that minor slip of focus, the 2023 US Open champion tightened up her game and jumped to a 3-1 lead after that. Cocciaretto has the weapons to trouble some top players, but she really needs to play sharp tennis.
In this match it was more on the hit-and-miss side, and playing Gauff contributed to that. She was overthinking way too frequently, and it hurt her.
The American won the match 6-1, 6-2 in about an hour of play, which was a pretty good day at the office for her. She will return to the courts later today for some doubles with Katerina Siniakova.
