The 2022 Chennai Open is one of the two tournaments held right after the last Grand Slam of the season from September 12th until 18th.
Usually, the events that are played right after a Grand Slam tournament don't have an entry list filled with star names and that's true also for the 2022 Chennai Open. The WTA event returns to India for the first time since 2008 when Serena Williams defeated Patty Schnyder in the final and technically, she's a defending champion.
But obviously, the 23-time Grand Slam champion won't compete at this year's Chennai Open as she ended her career at the US Open. The entry list is led by Alison Riske-Amritraj, who is married to former Indian player, Stephen Amritraj and so the American has a really big fan base in India.
The event features also players that are ranked outside of Top 100 of the WTA Rankings and so also youngsters like Linda Fruhvirtova will get their chance in India. This year's Wimbledon semifinalist, Tatjana Maria is also present on the entry list and Magda Linette and Varvara Gracheva will be also one of the challengers.
