Stefanos Tsitsipas showed concern when a ball girl was accidentally struck by a powerful serve of his opponent at the 2022 Mallorca Championships.
Tennis players are human, so they are empathetic and sentimental when they are on the court. Situations where an opponent or ball kid is hurt can be quite distressing to them, and they will want to get to the end of the situation.
Recently, Tsitsipas played Benjamin Bonzi in the semifinal of the Mallorca Championships. The Frenchman was enjoying a great week at the ATP 250 event, having reached the semifinals without losing a set.
The last time he lost a match was at the 2022 Halle Open when Tsitsipas stopped him. Once again, the Greek star stood in Bonzi's way and a spot in the final of the Spanish grass-court tournament.
Bonzi was serving in the fourth game of the first set when his serve inadvertently hit a ball girl. Tsitsipas initially didn't notice it and was ready to continue the play.
But Bonzi paused the match to ascertain that the ball girl was not hurt, and Tsitsipas didn't hesitate to call for immediate medical assistance. The ball girl can be seen tearing down, and Bonzi is quick to apologize. She appeared to be in pain in her forearm.
The world number six triumphed 6-4, 6-4, in an hour and 34 minutes, but the match will be fondly remembered for Tsitsipas's kind gesture and emphatic performance.
The Greek star will pursue his first grass-court title of his career in the championship match against Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut. After stumbling in Stuttgart and more recently in Halle to Nick Kyrgios, Tsitsipas can head to Wimbledon on a high with a grass-court title on his bag.
