Andy Roddick has seen much outstanding tennis during his time as a player and an analyst, yet he is blown away by how Jannik Sinner is playing right now.
The Italian has undoubtedly been the standout player so far this season. He claimed a maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open before winning further titles in Rotterdam and Miami.
Those achievements mean Sinner has already accumulated $4 million dollars in prize money in 2024. This is an astonishing number to have reached before the start of the clay court season.
Unfortunately for his rivals, there does not seem to be any signs of him slowing down. Sinner crushed Sebastian Korda 6-1 6-2 in the opening round of the Monte-Carlo Masters in utterly devastating fashion.
Yet, Sinner said he is still not where he wants to be after beating Korda. Roddick thinks he is in a more than good place. Speaking on the Tennis Channel, he said the way Sinner is dismantling his opponents is not normal.
"He's just smothering people right now. The scorelines you're seeing in his matches, it's not normal to beat Medvedev 1 and 2 on a hard court, it's not normal to beat Seb Korda, who had just beat someone 2 and 1 himself, 1 and 2. These are like junior scorelines."
Roddick also complimented Sinner and his team for having the courage to change his service motion midway through the season last year. He said if other areas of his game keep improving as well, his level could become truly scary.
"The guts to change your serve to the step up as opposed to the platform last year, that takes a little guts. they deserve a little credit for that because of the way it has worked out. He is not getting broken, he can beat you off both sides.... if he starts throwing in these ridiculous drop shots and if the hard court movement translates to clay like it looked like today, this is scary. It is scary stuff."
