Jannik Sinner will be playing in the 2023 Miami Open semifinals and it's also thanks to staying focused during the rain delay.
Over the past couple of days, players at the 2023 Miami Open had to fight more than just their opponents. The weather and especially rain delays wreaked havoc in yesterday's and also today's schedule. While some had difficulties coping with it, others adapted really quickly.
One of the players that adapted well was Jannik Sinner. The Italian took on Emil Ruusuvuori in the quarterfinals, player he beat in all four of their meetings on the ATP Tour. But the Finn played well leading up to their match and surely wanted to cause yet another upset at the Sunshine Double.
Ruusuvuori had the first break point in the match, but Sinner saved it and created a couple of chances to break his opponent in the next game. The Italian used his first chance and for the first time in the match, he was leading.
He never lost his advantage as he added one more break in the first set. After only 37 minutes, Sinner won the first set 6-3 and carried the momentum into the second set.
He got an early break, but he was stopped by a rain delay. Both players had to leave the court and wait more than two hours to play again.
After returning to the Hard Rock Stadium, Sinner just proved to be too good for Ruusuvuori, dominating the second set and winning the match 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals.
The Italian will surely observe closely the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz. One of those players will stand on the other side of the court against him in the semifinals and both are seeded higher than Sinner.
