Jannik Sinner is back to winning ways, as he started his 2024 Miami Open campaign with a win over compatriot Andrea Vavassori.
The Italian player entered the Sunshine Doubles without a loss in 2024, and it seemed that he will be able to carry the momentum also through the first two ATP Masters 1000 tournaments of the year.
It certainly looked that way in Indian Wells until he ran into an inspired Carlos Alcaraz. After the match, Sinner admitted that it was a difficult loss, but he changed his mindset quite quickly.
Already in Miami, he refused to dwell on it too much, focusing on his first match at the tournament instead. It was a second-round match against compatriot Andrea Vavassori after he had a first-round bye.
The fellow Italian had a lot of praise for Sinner ahead of the match, comparing his hitting to an explosion, and he certainly heard quite a few explosions during the match.
The match started as part of Friday's schedule, but already after a few games, it had to be postponed to Saturday when it continued, and it continued with the younger of the two dominating the play.
Sinner was just better in every aspect, and after breaking his opponent in the sixth game of the opening set, there was nothing that could possibly stop him from winning the set 6-3 and taking a crucial one-set advantage.
The second set was quite similar, as once again, Sinner was able to break his opponent's serve while never allowing any break points and as a result, he just dominated the match, winning it in two simple sets 6-3, 6-4.
It's his first win since the loss to Alcaraz, and to make it a winning streak, he'll need to beat the 25th-seeded Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands in the next round of the tournament.
