Casper Ruud looked like the overwhelming favourite to win the 2024 Los Cabos Open final, but Jordan Thompson was just unstoppable this week.
The Australian had one of the wildest journeys into an ATP final, and that was partially a reason why he wasn't favored in the final match against Ruud, who, on the other hand, bested all of his opponents in straight sets.
Thompson was first down 0-6, 1-4, and 15-40 against Alex Michelsen, just to come back in that match and reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, he bested Alexander Zverev in a three-hour and 42-minute marathon.
That match finished after the midnight, and it was expected that the Australian wouldn't be as fresh as his opponent in the match. However, he put together a similar effort as he did against Michelsen, saving an incredible amount of break points.
In the first set of the match, the Norwegian had six chances to break his opponent, yet, he couldn't break his serve. On the other hand, Thompson had only one chance, and he used it, and that was enough for him to win the set 6-3.
Ruud opened with a break in the second set and led 2-0, but his opponent was then able to win five of the following six games to make it 5-3, once again using 100% of his break points.
The three-time Grand Slam finalist then managed to make it 5-5 and send the second set into a tie-break, but he was no match for Thompson, who won the match 6-3, 7-6(4) to win the 2024 Los Cabos Open.
The Australian still has a chance to make it a perfect week in Los Cabos, as he's also in the doubles competition, which means he will have to play three matches in one day. Still, it can be a day with two trophies, so it's certainly worth it for him.
