Rune Defends Raducanu Over Rapid 58-Word Press Conference

| by Evita Mueller

Holger Rune supports Emma Raducanu's minimalistic approach to dealing with British media, championing the power of silence.

Ahead of the 2023 Madrid Open, Raducanu held a truly rare press conference when she used only 58 words to answer 16 questions. It seemed that the 2021 US Open champion wasn't in the mood for talking ahead of the first clay-court WTA 1000 event, and only a few hours later, we probably found out why.

Raducanu was forced to withdraw from the 2023 Madrid Open due to a right-hand injury, resulting in a drop from the Top 100 for the first time since her major triumph in the Flushing Meadows. But while some fans weren't happy with her press conference, fellow pro from the ATP Tour, Holger Rune could relate to the Brit's choice to provide short answers.

The young Dane is one of the players who advocate for more personality in tennis, however, he also knows that it can be sometimes difficult to deal with the press and so when Raducanu's full press conference was shared, the teenager provided a short comment, stating:

"The only way to be sure not to be misunderstood is to give nothing."

But it wasn't only Rune who could relate. Fellow WTA pro, Eugenie Bouchard, who is also trying to return to the top, was asked about Raducanu's press conference and she could really relate with the Brit, as she said:

"I see lots of similarities. I feel for her in a sense. She has a great life, she’s set for life and she’s had great achievements. But I can understand a little bit, possibly the pressure, the scrutiny."

"She tweeted something, posted something about not doing tennis one day and people were like, `Why don’t you go practice.’ I was like, `Oh, my God, I went through that six, eight years ago.’ Haters will hate, you know what I mean?"
