Reilly Opelka calls French Open the best Grand Slam due to not becoming 'political'

Reilly Opelka voiced his displeasure with tennis becoming much more political than in the past and he's singled out the Roland Garros as the best one.

American number two Reilly Opelka always held outspoken views and he frequently used social media to express his opinions on various subjects. Other times he would reference them in interviews and that's what happened in a recent sitdown with Red Bull.

"I’ve loved all [the Grand Slams] at different times, but right now, the French Open is the best by far," Opelka expressed. "It’s my least favorite surface, but I love Paris, and it’s the only Grand Slam that has done it right in recent years. All of the others have gone so political."

His reasons for holding this opinion stem from the event's reluctance to bar any players from the competition. Both Russian athletes and an unvaccinated Novak Djokovic were permitted to compete in Paris.

"Australia didn’t allow Novak Djokovic to play [because of his COVID vaccine status], but I think they’re going to allow the Russians to play," Opelka remarked and added "The French allowed everyone to play, Wimbledon are banning the Russians but allowing Djokovic and the U.S. Open is banning Djokovic but not the Russians. So the French Open is hands-down the best Grand Slam. For me, it’s the only true Grand Slam now."
