"One guy who has 22 Grand Slams" - Bartoli maintains Djokovic is best men's player

As the debate rages on about whether Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz is currently the best men's player in the world, former Wimbledon winner Marion Bartoli has given her verdict.

Djokovic lifted his 22nd career Grand Slam title with victory at the 2023 Australian Open in January. Meanwhile, Alcaraz has won Indian Wells, and the Argentina Open and reached the Rio Open final so far in 2023.

As the two players continue to battle for the ATP world number one spot, arguments about who the current best men's player continue. But, when speaking to the Tennis Majors Match Points publication, Bartoli felt there is only one true great at present.

"It’s very simple – it’s Novak Djokovic [who is the true world No 1]."

Marion Bartoli said to Match Points

Despite her clear admission in favour of Djokovic, Bartoli admitted that Alcaraz is a talent to watch for the future following his sensational results in 2022 and 2023.

“I’m not saying Carlos Alcaraz didn’t deserve the results he’s had, he obviously played tremendous tennis. It’s great to see that those kids are taking over and making sure the ATP has a really bright future ahead."

In addition, Bartoli pointed to the numbers to showcase who the true best player is among Djokovic and Alcaraz at this moment in time.

Although, she believes that tennis fans could be in for a treat if the two players face off in the coming months - which could truly reveal who the best men's competitor is in 2023.

"For now, you have one guy who has 22 Grand Slams and another one who has one Grand Slam. It’s very easy to say who is No 1. But I’m looking forward to the clay and to Wimbledon ahead to see when both of them are able to play those events, if they go toe to toe, who will be the best.”
