Daniil Medvedev defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime just days ago in Rotterdam and he'll play him again in Doha for a spot in the final.
The Rotterdam match was a quarter-final and this one was a semi-final but Auger-Aliassime will hope to change the result from last week. It was a straight-set win for Medvedev who ultimately won the trophy in the end.
I hope that I can do better than last week for sure. It’s kind of a chess game to play Daniil. It’s really tough. He’s gotten me every time since we’ve played, so hopefully tomorrow I’ll get my shot and try to win.
To reach the semi-final Medvedev had to claw past O'Connell who gave him a rather tough time. Only at 5-5 in the final set did Medvedev find a way to break his opponent and finish off the match.
At 5-5 in the third, you have a last chance to break him and then serve for the match. I managed to play quite a good game. He missed a few shots that he didn't miss before. It was an important moment in the match and that made me win today.
The Russian further explained that tennis is a strange sport. Sometimes you have luck and it works out in your favour. That could certainly be the way his match against Auger-Aliassime goes as well with the small moments deciding.
Everything depends on small moments. Sometimes confidence, sometimes pure luck. I have lost close matches in my life and won some. I am trying to use my experience to make it better. I am happy it worked today.
