"I’ll always do what’s best for me" - Kyrgios on skipping Davis Cup

Nick Kyrgios opened up about his decision to skip the 2022 Davis Cup Finals, despite participating a few days later at an exhibition tournament.

The Australian no. 1 in singles and doubles known for his flashy playing style and sometimes controversial behavior, has decided to skip representing his country at the 2022 Davis Cup Finals in favor of competing in the exhibition tournament 2022 Diriyah Tennis Cup. The exhibition tournament, which is held in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia and offers a prize of $1,000,000 to the champion.

Kyrgios' decision has sparked debate among tennis fans and pundits, with some arguing that he should prioritize representing his country over the financial incentive of the exhibition tournament.

The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis, and many consider it to be a privilege and honor to represent one's country in the competition. However, Kyrgios has defended his decision.

“At this point of my career, I’ll always do what’s best for me,” he said. “I can travel around the world playing exhibitions around this time of year for six figures – you know, I feel I put myself in that position – so it’s an easy one for me."

“I’ll easily take time with my family and my girlfriend and enjoy experiences around the world and earn that type of money rather than play a week away in something where I wouldn’t be able to be with my girlfriend and I’m not getting paid that well. [That] doesn’t really make sense to me and my progression as an athlete.”

It remains to be seen how Kyrgios' decision will impact his standing within the tennis community and with the Australian tennis federation. Some have criticized him for putting his own interests ahead of those of the national team, while others have applauded him for prioritizing his own career.
