Holger Rune entered the Top 10 for the first time on January 9th, 2023, and after more than a year, he's set to leave it.
The Danish youngster will leave the Top 10 this upcoming Monday when the ATP publishes its new rankings. This comes shortly after failing to match his results at this time last year, which is important in a 52-week ranking system.
There is a yearly cut-off, meaning that the present amount of points is the amount the player collected in the previous 52 weeks. For Rune, that proved a problem because he had a tremendous start to the 2023 campaign and then a rapid fall-off in the second half.
Wimbledon was his last strong event before that losing streak that lasted seven matches. The losing streak meant that he barely won any points in the post-Wimbledon part of the season, which also means that the bulk of his Top 10 points were from the early part of the year.
A good number of them were from the Monte-Carlo Masters run last year, which was cut short in the final by Andrey Rublev. Those points will come off on Monday, and since he didn't have the same run this year (quarter-final loss to Jannik Sinner), he is set to leave the Top 10.
Per the currently projected rankings, Rune is set to drop 5 spots to being number 12 in the rankings. He will lose 400 points compared to last year, which isn't a small amount by any means, and it will leave him outside of the Top 10 for the first time since January of last year.
The highest he was raked in 2023 was number 4, dropping to number 7 at the start of this year, and he is now projected to be ranked 12th on Monday, April 15th.
